Cuter than an intrauterine
In life, much of the time we have to make do with what we have, amirite?! The Golden Girls are famous for doing this! One of the things I loved so much about this show was that they discussed being a woman and providing for herself with the reality that things cost money. Granted, it wasn’t as common as it is now, but I don’t remember a single episode when the Girls walked into the house with a coffee in hand. They were always sitting down to coffee at the table, cooking meals, making their own ice cream sundaes and only going on shopping sprees when they thought they’d won the lottery (or sold an original DeKimmel painting!)
Most of us are not independently wealthy or are not in the situation where we can spend any amount of money without consequence, and that’s okay. There are so many more people in that situation than the other, and the Girls are real about that. They have discussions about jobs and how Dorothy, Rose and Sophia all have to be cognizant of their finances (Thank God Blanche had the foresight to marry money!)
In any case, one of the many things I find comforting about the series is that it’s relatable. In reality, we often make it work when when we think it won’t which is exactly what Rose was doing with these lyrics. Ultimately, they switched gears entirely to another melody and other lyrics but I would have loved to have heard how this version turned out!
For those who may not be familiar with this episode, this 1:37 clip pieces it all together:
