Happy (Almost) Birthday, Rue!
People ask me if I'm like Blanche, if we're one in the same and I always say, '...let's just check the facts; Blanche is a man-crazy, sex-driven, glamorous, vain southern belle from Atlanta, Georgia and I'm not from Atlanta.'
Oh Rue! How we miss you! This gal was something else, and I'm bummed I was never able to meet her. It's clear, from that quote alone, that she was perfect for the role of Blanche.
Blanche Devereaux was the character that was needed in the 80s and it's still needed today. Blanche's unapologetic sexual appetite, enthusiasm for dating whoever the hell she wants whenever she wants and encouragement toward other women to claim the same autonomy is nothing short of inspirational despite the jokes at her expense. She really and truly was a feminist when it came to women's sexual liberation and gave exactly zero f*cks about society telling her the way women "should" behave and for that, I am truly grateful Rue decided to take on this role.
One of the best quotes she delivers in Season 1 sums up her progressive attitude on sexuality:
I do enjoy the company of gentlemen, always have. But I can promise you one thing...when I'm with a man it's because I like him: not because I want him to like me... If you don't like yourself you can't respect yourself. And if you can't respect yourself, neither can anybody else.
Thanks for doing such an amazing job with this role, Rue! We miss you!
