If anyone knows how to give 'the look,' it's our Girls!
Over the weekend I went to the Long Island Women's Diversity Summit, which was really freakin' awesome for myriad reasons.
Aside from the entertainment and open discussion and talk about so many really important topics, one of the workshops/sessions I went to was titled, 'How to Speak Up In Room Full of Powerful People.' One of the biggest topics we discussed was when someone chronically interrupts you. We were given some different tools and phrases to use, depending on the interrupter's status, if there's a power imbalance, whether or not you're comfortable enough to mention it right when it happens or revisit it after the meeting is over, etc. All really helpful information!
That being said I, personally, find that a super simple way to get your point across is with a look and nothing else. As you can see from the picture above, it's pretty self-explanatory. (That's an expression you may see on my face if you even remotely look like you're about to touch my child.) Also, take our Golden Girls; is anyone unclear as to what the message might be from these women?
Of course, maybe you want to take a less aggressive approach if you choose to have your message relayed on your face. In that case, I find that the following to be a little more gentle, but helpful:
"Umm, didn't I suggest that 10 minutes ago?"
When all else fails and it just isn't the situation for you to lay the smack down (either verbally or visually), just do what they do in The Golden Girls; sing 'Camp Town Races' in your head while said a-hole is talking and try to stifle your laughter as best as possible.
"DOOO DAHHHH, DOOO DAHHHH!"
Oh yeah, and BTW you can get the shirt I'm wearing in my Etsy shop.
In friendship and cheesecake,
